When Is FHO Surgery Recommended?
Femoral head ostectomy (FHO) is most often recommended for:
- Small and medium dogs and cats with painful hip dysplasia
- Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease in young small-breed dogs
- Hip fractures that cannot be repaired with pins or plates
- Recurring hip dislocation (luxation)
- Severe hip arthritis that no longer responds to medication
Our veterinarian will examine your pet, take digital X-rays and talk through every option before recommending surgery.
What Is FHO Surgery?
FHO is a well-established orthopedic procedure that relieves hip pain by removing the femoral head, the “ball” at the top of the thigh bone that sits in the hip socket. When the ball and socket are damaged, bone grinding on bone causes constant pain. Removing the femoral head stops that contact.
Over the following weeks, the body forms a cushion of scar tissue in its place, creating a “false joint.” The surrounding muscles then support the leg and hip. Most pets regain comfortable, active use of the leg, and many walk and run better than they did before surgery because the source of pain is gone.
FHO works especially well for cats and for dogs under about 50 pounds, whose lighter weight is easily carried by the muscles around the hip. For larger dogs, we will discuss whether FHO or a referral for total hip replacement is the better fit.
